Durham University – Elizabeth Pease House

Extension and refurbishment of existing Student Accommodation building for St Aidan’s College, Durham University.

A carefully considered, yet bold & modern extension was added to the existing accommodation block (formerly designed by Sir Basil Spence), to offer purpose built communal/recreational accommodation linked to the existing bedroom wings.

PH Partnership liaised closely with the Planning Department and Conservation officer to develop a cutting edge design which enhanced the context of the existing Listed Building.

The project included complete reorganisation and refurbishment of the existing accommodation including insertion of bathroom pods and associated services to create fully En suite bedrooms for all students.

Also included were a variety of accessible bedrooms.

The whole building was completely refurbished including a brand new accessible entrance.  The extension was designed to sit centrally between the accommodation with a glazed form projecting out into an existing landscaped area to the rear.  The extension contained modern kitchens and comunal facilities including a number of TV/Recreational rooms to each floor with 180 degree aspect onto the surrounding landscape and adjoining college buildings.

The modern treatment and innovative use of space was extremely well received by the college and students alike, and offered a successful addition to the University’s services.
